October 7, 2007 Update:
We are very happy to announce that Karina's first year of school has been covered and that she is doing well in her classes. Karina will begin clinical hospital experience this November. On another note, the need for Pilar for the special school is now acute.

We have a need for two sponsors:
We need a sponsor for one of our oldest girls to attend nursing school. The cost is $450 per year or about $37.50 per month. This is for Karina who has passed her entrance exams and is very intelligent young lady.
We also need a sponsor for a little girl who needs to go to the special school attended by two of our other special needs children. She has great difficulty concentrating and is not suceeding in the regular classroom. The cost for this program is $150 per month.

A critical need exists for eighteen new donors of $50 per month. For the past several years the orphanage has rented space on their property for a cell-phone tower. Recently this contract was lost. The tower had become antiquated and was eliminated. This has cost the orphanage their greatest source of funds outside of the El Buen Pastor Fund's provision. The need is critical as these funds were used for food and utilities. We would like to be able to replace this lost funding.
Special Tutoring - One of our special needs children needs additional specialized instruction. The cost of this is $85 per month. At age 8 he has a mental age of 3 due to brain damage from abuse. With his limitations, it is especially important that he be able to achieve his maximum potential.
For a number of years the orphanage has had a choir director. With this training the children sing and perform beautifully. They have sung for events throughout Morelia and even in Mexico City for then President, Vicenti Fox. This program had been funded by someone in the community who is no longer able to do so. The cost to reinstate the choral director and the music program is $75 per month. Beyond learning music, the children also learn teamwork and receive positive feedback.
