Is Morelia worth visiting?

Most definitely! It is known as the jewel of the Mexican colonial cities. UNESCO designated the city a world heritage site in consideration of its architecture dating from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Sightseeing opportunities abound in the city, and the nearby villages are known for their handicrafts. Each village has a specialty such as copperwork, pottery, woodworking or weaving.

Exactly where is the Casa Hogar El Buen Pastor located?

The Casa Hogar El Buen Pastor is located in the city of Morelia, the capital of the state of Michoacán, Mexico. With one million residents, the city is situated between Guadalajara and Mexico City in the Sierra Madre Mountains at an altitude of 6,300 feet. The Orphanage is located in the Colonia (district) Vasco de Quiroga, close to the Aqueduct.

How do the children come to live at the Orphanage?

The children are at the Orphanage because their parents are unable to care for them for one reason or another or they have been taken out of the home by a government organization because of abuse. The parents may be dead, ill or in prison or they may simply be too poor to provide for their children.

Are the children adoptable?

The children are not adoptable because they have ties to some family member, whether or not that person is able or willing to care for them. This is a hard concept for foreigners to grasp. In Mexico, one's primary responsibility is to the family, both immediate and extended. To relinquish a child for adoption, would be admitting failure of a cultural mandate.
